Overview

Search is often at the front and center of what we do and with the expansion of digital media in the enterprise, the time employees spend searching is only expected to surge. The rampant use of enterprise video across organizations, for instance, means that a great deal of business-related information will now be stored in the form of video for employees to extract insights and knowledge from.

How Search Works in VIDIZMO

Keeping in view the inherent challenges faced by the users in searching for relevant information, VIDIZMO has implemented a powerful search tool that helps users to quickly obtain the desired results from the information spread across the portal.

For example, based upon permissions assigned to the user, a search can be performed to bring up results which match keywords defined in entities such as Tags, Author Name, Closed Captions (CC), Category names and those defined as Custom Attributes. When the search is performed from the Portal Homepage or the Portal Library, VIDIZMO will look into these entities to bring up the results.

Users & Groups has its own search and will bring up the results based on the search criteria and requires Administrative permissions described below under the section Administrator Level Filters.

For a search mechanism to fetch the most optimal and efficient results, it should also have the ability to employ smart search technologies such as automatic speech recognition (ASR), optical character recognition (OCR), facial recognition, etc. to quickly and easily extract insights from video using artificial intelligence. Using the VIDIZMO's ability to thoroughly index stored content's metadata, search works globally across the platform to get all videos across all Portals within an Account or when performing a search within a specific Portal. VIDIZMO search works on all metadata, including titles, tags, description, long description, category, the author as well as any in-video content which is indexed and searchable.

Another aspect of VIDIZMO's search mechanism is its relevance-based search, which means that the searched Media or User with the highest weight will appear first. To narrow down the search, the platform performs a faceted search using filters created automatically using Tags, Author Name, Closed Captions, Category names, and user-defined Custom Attributes.

Here is how VIDIZMO uses in-video and platform-wide search:

  • Search using metadata: VIDIZMO allows a thorough and detailed search of all videos in the platform using metadata such as video title, description, tags, hashtags, author or even by custom attributes such as publishing date, video type, live event date, department, company, location or any other required identifiers.
  • Search by category: Videos under the same topic category can be collectively bundled and stored in playlists within VIDIZMO, which further improves its search effectiveness. A simple search would reveal results for all videos categorized under a particular topic, either individually or within an organized playlist.
  • Search in closed captions (CC): Using its automatic speech recognition (ASR) software, VIDIZMO also generates closed captions or video subtitles that display the text version of spoken words on the video screen adding clarity to video and audio files. The text in the closed captions is indexed so you can search by words or on-screen subtitles that appear in a video.   Moreover, CC increases the searchability and also assists those with hearing disabilities, an accessibility requirement for 508 Compliance. VIDIZMO supports CC for audio and video files with support for both existing closed captions or manually generated human transcripts to improve video search. VIDIZMO also enables indexing of all translated video transcripts and caption files so the user can search for terms within the video in their preferred language.

During video playback, a searchable transcript plays alongside the video enabling users to search within the transcript of the video to reach the desired moment within the video with ease. Moreover, by clicking on the transcript text, viewers can also jump to the desired section in a video.

In the transcription panel, enter a term, i.e., Sequestration (i), in the Search field, and if the searched term is found, all its instances get highlighted.

  • Search by video timestamp: VIDIZMO allows search based on a given timecode or segment within a video. For instance, you can simply search a time interval in a video to refine the search from that point onwards. Specific instances can be searched in a video by navigating to that timestamp within a video through the comments.

Here's an example:

I. Enter the time you wish to link and add it as a comment in the comments section.

II. When the comment becomes available, click on the highlighted link in the comment and you will be navigated to the required frame in the video.

  • Search using speech recognition: VIDIZMO’s offers automatic speech recognition (ASR) software to provide machine transcription, which helps index every spoken word in the video, thereby allowing users to search for any keywords or phrases spoken in a video. This way, users can quickly skip to any precise portion of the video where the searched keyword is used.

  • Search using facial detection: VIDIZMO utilizes intelligent facial detection software for speaker recognition within videos. Different sections of the video are marked based on the person speaking at various intervals to quickly jump to a particular speaker’s portion within a video by simply clicking on their face in the timeline. Moreover, viewers can search for video content by a specific speaker by simply typing their name in the search bar.

  • Using OCR to search text in a video: VIDIZMO utilizes optical character recognition (OCR) technology to detect and index text that appears in a video and converts it to a machine-readable text file for your use.

  • Search using mobile app: VIDIZMO mobile application, available on Android and iOS, has both traditional and smart search capabilities that enable you to search using any of the categories mentioned above, straight from VIDIZMO's mobile application.

Relevance-based Results

The more places a search term or part of the searched term appears, the more weight it carries in the search results and the higher it will be placed in the list.

In the example below, the media appearing at the top of the list has the term "Webinar" in multiple places, which has positioned it as most relevant to others on the basis of the searched term:

i. & ii. Searched Term: webinar

iii. & iv. Searched term mentioned in media's title and description (most relevant)

v. Searched term mentioned in second media's description only (less relevant)

vi. Searched term mentioned in a tag (least relevant)
