Closed captions are transcriptions of the words spoken in a video/audio. Closed captions can be used to add clarity to video and audio files. Moreover, it increases the searching ability and also assists those with hearing disabilities, an accessibility requirement for 508 Compliance. VIDIZMO supports Closed Captions (CC) for audio and video files. These can be added from the Media Settings either accessed from Media Manager or while uploading media.
VIDIZMO also renders automatic, machine generated transcriptions from transcoding providers such as Azure Media Services. In AMS, the encoding engine is called the Processor which uses the Dynamic Packager and the Indexer to transcode the media. The Dynamic Packager performs Transcoding, while the Indexer enables you to make the content of your media searchable and to generate a full-text transcript for closed captioning and keywords.

The transcription pane is available on the Playback page when there is a closed caption associated with the media (either manually uploaded or automatically generated).

VIDIZMO supports WebVTT format for closed captioning, which provides closed captions for video content, chapters for content navigation, text video descriptions, and any other metadata aligned with audio or video content.
Follow the steps below to add closed captions to a media file.
1. Log in with a Contributor+ role and click on the Add New Media (+) icon at the bottom right-hand corner.
2. You will be redirected to the Add New Media page. Click on Upload Video to upload your files.
3. From the Upload Video screen, drag-and-drop videos in the box or click on the link Click here to Upload
4. After you have selected your file to upload, you will be redirected to the Media Settings in the Media Manager. When you are done providing the necessary details on the Basic Settings, navigate to the Access Tab.

5. Follow the steps:
i. Navigate to the Closed Captions tab
ii. If you have a regional language file, you can select it from the drop-down list under the Culture section.
iii. Next, browse to the location where your CC file is located and upload it.
iv. The uploaded file gets listed in the CC File Location portion of the screen. Clicking on the "x" under the Action column removes the CC file.
Finally, use the Save and Close button to save your settings.
6. If you also want the closed caption transcript to be displayed beside the video player, with the ability to search within the transcript:
i. Click on the Publish tab
ii. Enable the Show Transcription option using the checkbox
iii. The Save button saves your settings. Alternately, use the Save and Close button if there are no more settings to be defined for this video.
Upon saving, the video will be queued for processing.
7. Once, the processing is complete, the video becomes available on the Portal's Homepage and the Portal's Library. Select the video for playback.
8. On the Playback screen:
iii. If the Show Transcription option is checked as specified in Step #6-ii above, the transcript of the Closed Captions will also appear in a pane on the right-hand side of the player. During playback, a searchable transcript plays alongside the video enabling users to search within the transcript to locate those points in the video where the searched term was used. Moreover, by clicking on the transcript text, viewers can also jump directly to that specific part of the video.
Note: The transcription pane only appears when the Show Transcription checkbox is checked and when there is a closed caption file associated with the media (either uploaded manually or generated automatically).
Re-uploading a Closed Captions file
There are instances, such as file corruption, modification to the transcript or corrections, which require the closed captions file to be re-uploaded. In such a case, you can select the video from the Media Manager and perform steps 4 and 5 as described in the previous section but this time you would need to remove the existing closed captions file first.
Here's how you can do it:
1. Select your video:
i. Either from the Homepage, the Media Manager or use the search bar and enter related keywords to locate your video.
ii. If you have searched for your video, it should be listed among the search results.
iii. Whether from the searched results or the Media Manager, click on your video. Your selection should show up on the left panel as the selected video with the available options to perform.
iv. Click on the Settings button to open the Media Settings.
2. Clicking on the Settings opens the Basic Settings tab.
i. Click on the Closed Captions tab.
ii. This is the Closed Captions file that needs to be replaced.
iii. Click on the "x" under the Action column to remove the previously uploaded CC file.
iv. The file gets removed immediately.
v. Save and Close to save your settings.
3. Once the previous file is removed, you can continue to browse to the location and upload the new CC file, following the same sequence as described in Step #5 of the first section in this article on How to Set Up Closed Captioning in VIDIZMO.
iii. If the Show Transcription option is checked as specified, the transcript of the Closed Captions will also appear in a pane on the right-hand side of the player. As the video plays on, that part of the transcript gets highlighted automatically on the right-hand side.
Roles and Permissions
Contributors, Moderators, Managers and Administrators are add closed caption files while uploading media, while Moderator+ roles can add from Media Manager as well.
